A Cavan man has spoken out about his dialysis journey in the hope of highlighting the importance of organ donation. Kilnaleck man Colm Chambers receives dialysis three times a week at Cavan General Hospital due his low kidney functions, something which he says effects not just him but his "entire family."
Despite this, Colm says his end goal is to get a kidney and get back to his normal life, particularly with his young family. Speaking to Northern Sound, Colm said it was “important” for him to use his voice to talk about organ donation and the importance of saving someone’s life.
"It's important for everyone to have a donner card and more importantly for people to have that conversation with their families," explained Colm.
"Legislation is being looked at, if that's passed it will mean that everyone has to opt out of their organs being donated, not opt-in and we need our politicians to push this bill through.
"The amount of people that this will help is unbelievable. If someone passes away, by donating the organs, their relations can keep the memory of their loved ones alive and I think that's very important for people to understand."
