A Cootehill man is appealing to members of the public to treat asylum seekers as "fellow human beings." Human right's campaigner Ruairi McKiernan was talking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show in relation to recent protests held in Co Clare.
This week, asylum seekers were forced to flee a hotel in Clare after local protesters blocked access with tractors
According to Ruairi, it is important for people to "maintain" some level of decency towards one another, regardless of any differences. The Cavan man added that this is a "national challenge" that must be brought to the fore.
"I do feel this is a time to speak out and for people to appeal for decency," he explained. "I think this is very much a national challenge at the moment which is very much rooted in bricks and mortar, housing and accommodation."
