Co Cavan Library Services is launching another series of history podcasts and this week's episode is 'The Life and Death of Andy O'Sullivan, 1885-1923' by Micil Ryan.
Historian in Residence Dr Brendan Scott, chats to numerous people throughout the series and brings some previously unknown local heroes of the past back
to life.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Dr Scott explained that Micil, a relative of Andy will discusses Andy's upbringing in Cavan and his life in Cork as an intelligence officer for the IRA, culminating with his earlydeath in Dublin while on hunger strike.
He said that next week's podcast will explore the life and times of Sean McEntire who died while blowing up a house in Ballyconnell.
Dr Scott added there is still much to learn from that period in Ireland's history including that of the important role of women.
"We did have a lecture a few years ago from a lady called Dr Sinéad McCool, a historian. She spoke about some of these women who really have not received the recognition they deserve and a lot of these women really had to beg to get a pension afterwards while men just lined up and were given them. It's terribly unfair. Those are some of the things, the untold stories of bravery that a lot of women in their day to day lives would've experienced".
