Cavan, Monaghan and Leitrim local authorities are among the highest performers in the country when it comes to dealing with environmental issues.
That's according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which published a report today on environmental assessment of local authorities.
The report highlights the fact that Ireland's water quality is continuing to deteriorate but EPA Inspector, Thomas Wallace told Northern Sound that the report also focused on environmental risks and the role of county councils in reducing and tackling that risk.
He says while there is plenty of "activity" with the environment, the role of of local authorities in dealing effectively with matters is crucial. Mr Wallace added that Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan county councils achieved high standards in the report because of their focus on local risk areas.
"Really they focused on localised risk areas and reported them to the EPA. They highlighted that they achieved either completed environmental outcomes in those areas; that they followed it up; and that there was a clear outcome at the end. And, so there is no doubt but they are in the top rung there," he added.
