A recruitment drive is underway across the region for the position of retained firefighters. This is your opportunity to serve your community in an exciting, dynamic, and fulfilling role.
On foot of the WRC agreement that was reached following industrial action during the summer, it has been agreed that local councils would recruit additional firefighters, which would enable more flexible time for firefighters to be off-call and give them a better work/life balance. Candidates must be aged 18 years of age and the current retirement age for firefighters is 60 years, subject to medical.
It is part of the terms of engagement for retained firefighters that anyone appointed shall work and reside within five minutes’ travel time from their local fire station and firefighters will be required to be on call for a minimum of 24 weeks per annum, on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week. Ronan Balfe who is a firefighter in Virginia says its a job that he really enjoys doing and would recommend anyone thinking of a career as a firefighter to come along to one of the open day event.
