People of the Northern Sound region are being advised to follow some simple rules to enjoy a safe Hallowe'en this year. Fire Chief with Cavan County Fire Service, Noel O'Reilly has said some awareness around the use of fireworks, candles and bonfires and, visibility when trick-or-treating can ensure a safe and enjoyable Hallowe'en for everyone.
Chief O'Reilly reminds people that illegal fireworks are not subject to safety standards and can often misfire. He also advised people not to set bonfires close to properties or beneath power lines and, under no circumstances should anyone use accelerants such as petrol, on a fire. Householders are also advised to be wary of leaving candles burning in the home, including Hallowe'en pumpkins, and to use LED alternatives where possible.
"We would advise parents to try to incorporate high visibility material or lighting of some description into their costume," Noel told Northern Sound, "I know that children want to keep as close as possible to the character they are trying to imitate but sometimes even incorporating a flashing light will get the visibility to other road users to keep these children safe on our roads."
