A Cavan councillor says "better communication" is needed between social housing tenants and the council, as one local family found themselves in arears of over €7,000.
Speaking at a recent Cavan County Council meeting, Cllr Paddy McDonald said that lower income families are not being notified of further increases or changes to their rental agreements.
As a result, he says people are left in a "vulnerable position," with limited means to clear "impossible" debts.
He proposed for Cavan County Council to introduce an online pay portal system which tenants can log into using a pin or account number to keep up-to-date with their balance and payments.
He called for the situation to be "sorted out immediately" with one local family now tied to living in an unsuitable home until arrears are paid in full.
