This Saturday, an exhibition that features Cavan during the War of Independence will be launched in Johnson Central Library.
It's full of new and fascinating insights into activity in the area 100 years ago and has been initiated from material that was gathered by Frank Dolphin, an IRA intelligence officer from Ballyconnell during the early 1920s.
Brendan Scott, resident historian with Cavan County Council, says there is a lot of material on RIC activity in the area at the time as well as a list of weapons that they had but no ammunition to use them.
He says there was a number of one-off killings in West Cavan during the War of Independence including the murder of a 13-year girl in the summer of 1922. Mr Scott added that people attending the exhibition should not go with preconceived notions but rather examine it with an explorative eye.
"There was a guy called Frank Dolphin who during the War of Independence was the Intelligence Officer for the West Cavan IRA. He collected a massive amount of material; I've never seen archival material like it on a local level to be honest with you.
"His son Frankie held on to all this material and collected more information as well, and then donated it to the library over the last few years. It's such an extraordinary collection of material that we decided it warranted an exhibition," said Mr Scott.
