A deputy principal in Cavan says older infants are easier to manage in the classroom.
Just one in six children starting primary school are four years old - a significant drop from 47 per cent two decades ago.
It's thought many parents are choosing to wait until their child is five as they now have access to two years free childcare under the ECCE scheme.
