Cavan County Council has warned "the deterioration of the road network will create a significant challenge for the Council when COVID-19 construction restrictions are eased".
It comes on the back of reports of the "poor condition and poor safety" of the R165, with local resident Dom Juric saying that "it's only a matter of time until something bad happens".
In a statement to Northern Sound News, Cavan County Council says it has had to "reduce road works activities" due to the current level 5 restrictions.
It added that these "restrictions, compounded by the recent inclement weather with severe frost, snow, and heavy rain" has had a damaging effect on the roads network.
The statement added that the council is "endeavouring to maintain its extensive road network within the context of a national emergency".
The Council also confirmed that repair crews have been mobilised to carry out "prioritised essential repairs, with a particular focus on the Regional Road network".
