Cavan County Council is to write to Minister James Browne seeking clarity over the findings of a review on firearms licencing in Ireland. Cllr Craig Lovett brought the matter to the table and received unanimous support from the floor.
Cllr Lovett says the current laws are antiquated and while they do need to be modernised, those impacted most must be consulted with. A public consultation has begun and he says that those involved in gun clubs, clay pigeon shoots and individuals in possession of a licenced firearm should engage in the consultation.
Cllr Lovett added there are seven civilian firearms per 100 people in Ireland and that figure is even higher in across Cavan and Monaghan. "There are about seven civilian firearms per 100 people in Ireland. And, in Cavan Monaghan that statistic would be even higher.
"So, any change in legislation would affect a lot of people in our area. I brought the motion to council level asking Minister Brown to clarify the findings of the review and asked him to engage - as much as possible - with the people who will be impacted by any change to legislation," he said.
