Cavan County Council says it's writing to the Office of Public Works about its vacant site in Cavan town.
The OPW has told Northern Sound News it's engaging with public bodies for a use for the site and if none is found it'll be placed on the open market.
The land, on the Farnham Road in the town, had been earmarked for decentralisation in the early 2000s - a plan that never came to fruition.
Councillor John Paul Feeley had called for the land to be kept in public ownership, given its proximity to Cavan General Hospital and the County Council offices.
The local authority says it has written to the OPW "with regard to the future of this site" but will "await the outcome of that correspondence before commenting further".
