Cavan County Council says it's at "advanced stages of negotiation" for the purchase of the former Donohoe's Foodfare in Cavan town.
The former business on Bridge Street is expected to form part of the Abbeylands plaza planned for the town centre.
Work is ongoing on the Abbeylands rejuvenation project, which it's hoped will bring new life to Cavan town centre.
The Council is in the process of acquiring the Donohoe's Foodfare building on Bridge Street.
A Spokesperson told Northern Sound News that negotiations are ongoing but they're at an advanced stage.
They say the purchase is "for the purpose of advancing the regeneration of the historic Abbeylands area of Cavan Town and is in line with the Council's strategic aim of revitalising its towns and villages as outlined in the Council's Corporate Plan".
It's the second major purchase as part of the plan, with the former McIntyre's building on Abbey Street bought in 2018.
It's hoped the area around the Abbey can be redeveloped and better incorporated into the town as a new civic space.
