Cavan County Council marked the Centenary of An Garda Síochána with a civic reception at the courthouse on Monday.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr John Paul Feeley welcomed Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to the event which saw a gathering of members of An Garda Siochana, local elected and public representatives, and officials from the executive of Cavan County Council.
In his address to the event, Cllr Feeley described An Garda Síochána's formation as a "seminal event" in Irish history. He said it was done "in a hurry" to fill, what he described as, "the vacuum and start the process of normalisation after the War of Independence".
Cllr Feeley added that the formation marked an important distinction between political supervision of the police force and direct day-to-day involvement.
