Members of Cavan County Council have agreed to write to Cavan County Board to insist that it accepts cash at matches. The development follows complaints to councillors by members of the public who arrived at games with cash in their pockets only to be told it was ticket only entry.
Cllr Sarah O’Reilly said the issue centred around the move in more recent times to a cashless society but added there was a cohort of people who still use cash to avail of goods and services. She says purchasing a ticket for Cavan games is complicated and involves downloading two apps, having high-speed broadband, and being au fait with digital and smartphone technology.
She added that when the App stopped working earlier this year, Cavan County Board accepted cash under that circumstance. "I tried to buy last minute tickets for a friend to an U12 final in Breffni Park and the App kept throwing me out. I was offered cash of the gate and was refused; I was raging, I thought the absolute cheek of them.
"The person I was trying to buy the ticket for was home from Australia hoping to see a nephew play in a final and the GAA refused to take cash. It is a disgrace and it's a bad day when the GAA won't take cash," she added.
