Members of Cavan County Council have agreed to write to the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris asking that the rate of youth emigration - with a particular focus on graduate cohorts leaving in the greatest numbers - be monitored,
The move followed a discussion initiated by Cllr Sarah O'Reilly who told those gathered that a recent poll conducted by the National Youth Council of Ireland revelad that 70% of young people are contemplating emigration.
She highlighted how there are "no reliable statistics" on the numbers of young people leaving Ireland every day. Cllr O'Reilly pointed out that it needs to be determined if more young people are leaving rural Ireland than their counterparts in urban centres or is it vice versa?
She added that there is a perception that employment in gainful in Ireland yet young people appear to be leaving these shores in their droves because the can't afford to live here.
