Cavan councillors are calling for the Deposit and Return Scheme to be rolled out in the county.
Carrickmacross installed Ireland's first reverse vending machine two years ago and it allows people to bring empty plastic bottles for recycling - users can then redeem a 10 cent voucher per bottle.
In April of this year, the government committed to introduce the Deposit and Return Scheme by Quarter 3 of 2022.
However, Councillor Aiden Fitzpatrick recently passed a motion at a County Council meeting calling for Environment Minister Eamon Ryan to provide an update on the scheme.
Minister Ryan recently announced five million euro in additional funding for litter infrastructure and awareness campaigns, and Councillor Fitzpatrick says this money could have been used to fund reverse vending machines right across the country.
The Cavan Councillor says it's important for the local authority to "keep the finger on the button":
