A Cavan County councillor who has been volunteering at Mullahoran mass with Father PJ Hughes during the pandemic says he always felt safe in the church.
Councillor Phillip Brady says Father PJ was eager to get mass out to the parish and came to the councillor seeking help.
Councillor Brady set up a Facebook page on which to broadcast the service.
However, soon people started to turn up in person and local gardaí cautioned Father PJ for allowing people to gather while he celebrated mass.
Councillor Brady says he would be the first to condemn unsafe gatherings, but that everything was done right and there were only around 20 people in attendance.
He told The Joe Finnegan Show that Father PJ never invited people to come for public mass and wasn't seeking controversy:
