A discussion around the impact of the closure of key businesses in town and village centres and what can be done to preserve indigenous industry there took place at Monday's meeting of Cavan County Council.
The conversation was initiated by Cllr Sarah O'Reilly who believes that the closure of hotels in town centres locally is having the most negative impact.
She said that another factor for struggling town centres is the closure of main service providers like banks, post offices, and retail outlets.
According to Cllr O'Reilly, the trend is increasing in that hoteliers are taking advantage of the current accommodation crisis with some selling up and getting out of the business, a move which she doesn't blame.
