A Cavan councillor has condemned recent acts of illegal dumping in the Belturbet area.
The issue of large scale fly tipping and illegal dumping was highlighted at the most recent meeting of Cavan County Council
Regular incidents of bags of nappies being thrown from a car onto the road between Ballyconnell and Belturbet every Wednesday or Thursday have allegedly been ongoing for the last 8 weeks. Belturbet Councillor, Brendan Fay, says it's not fair on locals having to clean up other people's messes. He branded the behaviour as disgusting and says that data protection laws are preventing CCTV being installed to catch illegal dumpers.
"I just believe that this GDPR is there to protect criminals and fly-tipping and the like. We're not allowed to use cameras seemingly somewhere in this wonderful country of ours to catch thieves, fly-tippers,a nd people are allowed to continue to do what they do. I think if we had cameras at some of these areas that people are doing this, it probably won't stop it, but if someone is named and shamed they just mightn't do it again".
