Cllr Shane P O'Reilly has called for a special meeting of Cavan County Council so that all agencies and stakeholders involved in mental health and suicide prevention can come together and discuss the matter.
The Independent local area representative was speaking during this month's meeting where mental health and suicide were discussed in some detail.
Cllr O'Reilly says that there is an onus on everyone in society to "look out for each other". He pointed out that stress levels and fear have increased since the Covid-19 pandemic, and the cost of living crisis is exacerbating those feeling for many people.
Cllr O'Reilly added that the time has come for all of us to really start listening to others and become more aware of how people 'actually' feel. "On numerous occasions I have had to help families where they had people that needed help.
"The psychiatric services in Cavan town are doing their best and we have other people trying to do their best. But sometimes that level of intervention is not what is needed.
"Sometimes all that is required is a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, someone just to listen. And I think as a society we have forgotten how to do that," he said.
