A Cavan councillor has called for more support to be given to mortgage holders who are facing extreme pressures.
At a recent Cavan County Council meeting, Cllr Sarah O'Reilly said she believes a lot more help and support could be provided.
According to Cllr O'Reilly, ESB raised interest rates four times last year, with one in 20 mortgage holders now living in poverty.
Cllr O'Reilly said she fears the current crisis will "only get worse" as interest rates will continue to increase as the year progresses.
"I am hearing many truly sad stories and it is heart-breaking to listen to people who are truly terrified about losing the roof over their head," she said.
As a result, the Aontu representative believes banks should absorb the increase in interest rates and take a hit on their profits.
