A Cavan councillor has called for an increase in the use of the Irish language in the council chamber.
Sinn Féin Councillor, Stiofán Conaty, is also the Irish language officer for a voluntary group in County Monaghan.
According to the Redhills native, using Irish to conduct council business would increase exposure to the language.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he says giving council staff access to Irish language resources may inspire more to re-learn the language
"I believe the option should be there for anybody within Cavan County Council staff if they want to become fluent that it's there and the avenues and pathways towards that are there. That comes in the form of classes. Definitely there are stages to this, you start with the cúpla focail and you move forward. There's nobody saying that people who HAVE to learn Irish or go to these classes, this is just an option for people who want to learn Irish within Cavan County Council and hopefully that might show leadership to the rest of the county".
