A Cavan Councillor has called for an amnesty to allow experienced drivers tow a trailer without an additional licence.
Fine Gael's Winston Bennett says the extra step is a "money gathering exercise", and he's been contacted by a number of farmers who had previously been driving without knowing they needed a BE licence.
He claims it costs over €700 to follow the process, and takes up the time of drivers who had otherwise been towing trailers for years.
It was agreed that the council write to the Department of Transport to have the proposal considered for people who've held a licence for more than ten years.
Councillor Bennett said he's aware of the safety aspects and the reason the rule is in place.
