Women's health was to the fore at this week's meeting of Cavan County Council. Cllr Aine Smith called for the support of her fellow councillors in her motion that called on the Department of Health to invest more in clinical treatments for women.
During proceedings she highlighted how the lack of awareness around endometriosis was causing millions of women across the world to suffer in silence. Cllr Smith said it was a chronic and debilitating illness that often led to more serious health issues because diagnosis and treatments were limited.
She added that an education programme on the disease needed to be introduced in schools for young girls. "There is actually a programme that could be brought into the curriculum as part of SPHE and wellbeing that is run throughout secondary schools in particular.
"There is the 'Me Programme' which is run in New Zealand and it educates young girls in schools about the signs and symptoms of endometriosis. So, it is very important that the information is put out there and that it is highlighted," said Cllr Smith.
