Cavan County Council members voted to accept a motion at yesterday's meeting calling on the Government to extend the eviction ban to the end of the year.
The motion, which was brought forward by Cllr Paddy McDonald and seconded by Cllr Sarah O'Reilly seeks to protect the 'thousands of people' who have been served with a notice to quit by landlords.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McDonald said that 212 people presented as homeless in Cavan last year and just 12 of those were homed.
He pointed out that families are now having to split up with fathers and mothers returning to their family home such is the lack of housing supply locally.
He added that houses need to be built and until they become available to the people that need them, the eviction ban must be re-introduced.
