A Cavan councillor has called for an investigation to be launched into how potatoes originating in France were labelled with a Bord Bia quality mark. According to Aontu Cllr, Sarah O'Reilly, it's vital that the appropriate measures are put in place to ensure that incidents like this would not happen again.
Earlier this month it emerged that Keogh's Farm in North Dublin had shipped consignments of baby potatoes to some retail outlets around the country with the Bord Bia Quality Assurance label. The company admitted that a mistake has been made and said an internal investigation was underway.
According to Cllr O'Reilly, it's "important" to make sure that the findings in the internal audit are made public so the "trust" of consumers can be regained. "To me and to many potatoe farmers this situation is completely unacceptable.
"It needs a thorough investigation to maintain the trust of Irish potatoe farmers who really work hard to meet the strict quality assurance standards that are set by Bord Bia. That then ensures that their products are elligable for a Quality Assured mark," she added.
