Cavan Chef Neven Maguire continues his travels this week on RTE 1 as he cycles the Royal Canal Greenway - a 130km cycling and walking trail passing through counties Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Longford.
The Royal Canal is over 200 years old and links the River Liffey in Dublin to the River Shannon in Co Longford. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Neven admitted that it was his first time on the much-loved amenity and he has been struck by its beauty and the potential of the locations he visited.
Neven pointed to the high quality of engineering and workmanship on the Royal Canal which means that its locks and bridges are still in almost perfect condition today.
The local chef has also been cooking and sampling delicious food while on his travels and this week's journey features Carton House in Maynooth; the Wineport in Athlone; and Multifarnham Cookery School in Co Westmeath.
"It's a great part of the world and with this series we are showcasing how beautiful Ireland really is. It was my first time on the Royal Canal and it was just fantastic. I met producers and chefs along the way which was just fantastic but the Royal Canal really does showcase what is beautiful about our country," said Neven.
