Following their impromptu céilí aboard an Aer Lingus flight at the weekend, the Cavan branch of Comhaltas has gone viral. The Aer Lingus flight which was experiencing delays while travelling from Frankfurt to Dublin were entertained by members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Cavan.
The group of musicians whipped out their banjos, fiddles, wooden flutes and more, rocking the aisle of the aircraft. One of the group's leaders, Eugene Lynch, told Northern Sound there were some savvy social media users on their flight so it wasn't long before a video of the Cavan kids made it's way on to the internet. Eugene explained how the teenagers took their traditional instruments out to "pass the time" on their flight home.
The group played three selections much to the delight of the other passengers and a video of the session has now been viewed millions of times online. Eugene Lynch said it was "a pleasure" for the Cavan students to play and entertain.
"These teenagers we had with is are very, very skilled musicians," Eugene told Northern Sound, "but they have a love for the music and a passion for playing and playing good quality music and, in fairness to them, any opportunity they get they're mad to play, you don't have to drag it out of them and when we were sitting on the plane they thought 'sure, why not?'".
