The Cavan chairwoman of the National Women's Political Caucus says that efforts are underway to increase female participation in 2024.
Cllr Carmel Brady, who was speaking to Northern Sound today, said the aim of the caucus was to create an atmosphere of inclusion for women. She said that 25% of local area representatives nationally are women but the percentage is lower in rural areas.
Cllr Brady added there is a reason why women are not entering the political arena in the first instance. She said, the caucus aimed to explore those reasons and create the appropriate conditions for female participation in the long term.
"We are just trying to change meetings so they can be remote and online," she continued.
"We would like to see more flexible meeting times; the duration of the meeting needs to be looked at as well. We just want to see if we can make things a bit easier for female councillors especially if they become involved in local politics."
