A Cavan animal sanctuary is raising money to neuter as many cats and kittens as possible in an attempt to alleviate the growing problem of stray cats in the area. The Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary works out of Virginia but, for over 20 years now, has taken in over 11,000 stray cats from all over Cavan and the surrounding areas.
The shelter recently received generous funding from the Department of Agriculture but the cost of bedding, food, litter, and vets' bills is ongoing and rising. Maire Egan has dedicated herself to keeping the population of stray or un-neutered cats in Cavan to a minimum. She says the Kitten Cottage is still dealing with the fall-out from the pandemic when owners couldn't go to a vets to have their cat neutered and when many people thought it a good time to bring a pet into their home.
This important local service is asking for people to donate by GoFundMe, the link for which is on their facebook page to help them continue their work. "With this GoFundMe page we are specifically using that for neutering cats in Cavan and the surrounding areas," maire told Northern Sound, "That money will be going straight into the vets to neuter as many cats as we can. We're going to subsidise anyone who is looking to neuter their cats now. Not in six months' time when they've had kittens," she emphasised, "before they have kittens, which, is January and February."
