Callum Shiel from Bailieborough was crowned winner of the sheetmetal section in the WorldSkills Ireland 2024 event. Callum successfully competed in the national event which took place at the RDS in Dublin.
WorldSkills is dedicated to promoting skills, apprenticeship careers and work opportunities for young people. The 20-year-old works in Co Monaghan and is employed by Michael Ward, director of MJW Engineering which is based in Magheracloone. Speaking to Northern Sound, Callum said he was "delighted" with the win and has encouraged other young apprentices from across the region to get involved.
"There was altogether competing and a strong contingent from both Cavan and Monaghan," he explained. "There was a big ceremony and they announce the winner trade by trade. I wasn't expecting it. It was a close competition because everybody was so good and it was very hard to tell, I was just happy enough to be there competing and then I was delighted to actually win."
