An animal sanctuary in Cavan raised money at an event at the weekend as it braces itself for the usual post-Christmas demand on its services. The Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary in Virginia takes in all animals in need including wildlife but, started off as a refuge for stray or unwanted cats and kittens. The periods immediately after Christmas and the school summer holidays are the busiest for Maire Egan and her volunteers as people "clear out" unwanted items from their homes.
She urges people to think long and hard before gifting a pet to someone for Christmas. On Saturday, the Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary took a stall at a fair in Drumbarragh National School. All proceeds will go towards running her service and a targeted neutering programme in January.
