Sinn Fein spokesperson on health David Cullinan says he wants to see Cavan and Monaghan hospitals working in a way that ensures the provision of all services to local people.
He was speaking to Northern Sound before visiting Cavan General Hospital earlier today.
Deputy Cullinan said his visit will help him to better understand what the specific needs of Cavan General Hospital are.
That will then allow him, he added, to establish how all of that feeds into the services at Monaghan Hospital.
Deputy Cullinan also highlighted how he supported calls to expand the services at the minor injuries unit in Monaghan.
"I support the expansion of the minor injuries unit at Monaghan Hospital," he continued.
"It is good for the people of Monaghan and it will take pressure off Cavan General Hospital.
"What we need to do is make sure that between the two hospitals, they are aligned, and that they work together as best they can."
