There's a wide variation in numbers across the country.

Convictions for those caught driving without a valid licence are at an all-time low in the Shannonside Northern Sound region.

That's according to Road Safety Group PARC, who are criticising the fact that the majority of drivers brought to court on the charge from 2018 to 2020 escaped conviction for driving without a licence.

Data compiled by the group shows that Monaghan has the lowest conviction rate nationwide of 3.5 per cent, with just 19 people convicted out of 542 cases.

That's followed closely by Cavan, with just 40 out of 850 prosecutions resulting in a conviction.

In Leitrim, 13 per cent of court proceedings finished with a conviction with 28 cases successfully prosecuted out of 222.

22 per cent of motorists caught driving without a license were convicted in Roscommon, resulting in 45 drivers sentenced out of 2014.
