Almost €7.5 million has been pledged to Cavan and Monaghan for active travel road improvements. The funding will go towards 18 projects in Cavan and 22 in Monaghan. Of the total €3.825 million awarded to Cavan County Council, €500,000 will be used on bus stop enhancement programmes. The same goes for Monaghan who received €3.5 million half a million of which will also be spent on bus stop enhancements.
in Monaghan, some of the improvement works include the Lough Egish Village Active Travel Scheme who received €332,000 and Active Travel Plans for; Castleblayney, Ballybay, Clones and Carrickmacross which has been awarded €60,000. In Cavan, Ballyhaise Village received €90,000 while €52,000 is to be spent on the Bailieborough/Kells Road footpath.
Many schools in both counties are to receive grants to improve foot and cycle paths and greenways around their properties. Local TD Brendan Smith said the money will go to important local projects: "Quite a number of our towns and villages will see improvement works carried out which will benefit the local people and also enhance considerably, safety," Deputy Smith told Northern Sound, "There's substantial investment on the Station Road, Cootehill; the Loretto Road in Cavan Town; in Virginia and also Bawnboy. And in Monaghan, Monaghan Town, Lough Egish, Carrickmacross; so there is a large number of projects in both counties that will benefit from this funding."
