Analysis of yesterday's budget continues today with Cavan accountant, Mark Reilly, looking behind the headlines. His KBG accountancy firm has offices in Cavan and Longford and overnight he went through all the measures introduced in Jack Chambers' first budget for the Joe Finnegan Show.
In one word, Mr Reilly summed budget 2025 as "generous" and said families and anyone availing of social welfare payments have will be the main beneficiaries. Business and farming did not fare as well, he concluded.
The local accountant checked out Jack Chambers' claim that the average worker will be better off to the tune of €1,000 following his budget and Mark Reilly found that to be correct. But, he added the caveat that all the measures introduced to bring about that €1,000 lift are "one-offs": "The taxation measures plus the standard of living bonuses have all added up to give an overall better than €1,000," Mr Reilly said, "Now, there is one-off things in it; the energy credit for instance being worth €250. The disappointing thing here is there's a lot of one-off measures and a lot of these measures are coming in before Christmas, which, is very, very welcome but they're one-off measures. That's the disappointing thing."
