Sinn Féin leader McDonald said she believes that Cllr Bennet fills the role left by Heather Humphreys of a formidable, feisty, no-nonsense Monaghan woman.

Sinn Féin have now adopted a three candidate strategy in the Cavan Monaghan constituency for the upcoming general election. Cllr Cathy Bennet has now been added to the ticket following the party's second convention last night in The Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan. She joins sitting TDs Matt Carthy and Pauline Tully who were officially selected to run in early September..

The party had decided to run two candidates in a hope to see both returned in the local constituency but now have decided to run a three candidate strategy similar to Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.  Cllr Cathy Bennett who is the current cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council has been a poll topper for the party at the last two local elections. Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald delivered a keynote speech at the convention.

She said that Heather Humphreys announcement took everyone by surprise adding that you make your calls on balance. Deputy McDonald said she believes that Cllr Bennet fills that role of that formidable, feisty, no-nonsense Monaghan woman. Speaking to Sinn Fein members gathered she said there is always room for new, strong and fresh leadership and representation, particularly for women, she said she couldn’t be prouder of the ticket of Matt Carthy, Cathy Bennett and Pauline Tully.
