Cllr Aine Smith has been appointed Cathaoirleach of the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District while Cllr Brendan Fay was elected Leas Cathaoirleach. The elections were held this morning at the Annual General Meeting of the District.
In her acceptance speech, Cllr Smith highlighted how roads and the need for improvements would be top of her agenda. She added that housing and access to education would better the lives of everyone across the county.
Meanwhile, Cllr Fay said that tourist attractions and the completion of infrastructural projects were to the fore of his plans. He told Northern Sound that the new Abbeylands development, which is due to commence next year, will put Cavan town at the heart of the county's tourism hub.
Cllr Fay added that West Cavan and the Burren Geo Park have, already, put the county on the national tourism map. "The Council and the Executive have really gotten behind the Cavan Burren Park.
"People are coming to the area and once we get the Shannon Pot developed, more and more people will visit. And, Failte Ireland is investing in the Erne Shannon waterways, so there is a great buzz in the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District at the moment," he said.
