Castle Saunderson is on An Taisce’s Top 10 Most-at-Risk Buildings list for 2021.
This is the fifth time the list has been compiled by the group, which works to preserve and protect Ireland’s natural and built heritage.
Castle Saunderson was the location for the Covid-19 test centre during the pandemic, and there was some opposition to it at the time as locals were afraid it would impact their use of the area.
There are fears that it could now be lost to future generations unless direct action is now taken to preserve it.
An Taisce’s Head of Advocacy Ian Lumley says there is so much opportunity in restoration and conservation and doing so is more sustainable than allowing them to deteriorate, bulldozing them, or constructing new developments.
It is the only location in the Shannonside Northern Sound Region on the list, with Donaghy's Mill, in Drogheda also in the top 10.
