A local councillor has voiced his concerns as to why it is important for popular events to facilitate "everyone in society." Cavan's Shane P O'Reilly is the current liaison officer for the Rural Independent Group across Connaught and Ulster.
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Cllr O'Reilly expressed his concerns over the National Ploughing Association's decision to run with a "no cash admission policy" at this year's ploughing championships.
While the NPA has described the decision as a "health and safety measure" under the advice of emergency services, Cllr O'Reilly warned that the decision will make "no sense" to those who are not "computer savvy" and cannot purchase a ticket online.
Cllr O'Reilly also believes that the rationale behind events going cashless, is down to either a miscalculation in monies or a miscalculation in the amount of people attending. He added that people are being forced into a cashless society and has called for more events to be tailored in a way that facilitates everyone.
"There is an underlying reason as to why events are going cashless and that is that there is either a miscalculation in monies or a miscalculation in the amount of people attending events," he explained.
"I think if people were just honest about it and admitted that there is an issue here with regards to the recording of things and the tallying of finances when things are over. At the end of the day you have to facilitate everyone in society."
