RTÉ's true crime series 'The Case I Can't Forget' returns for another season, and tonight it will feature local towns from the Northern Sound region.
Episode one will visit the ATM heists of 2018 and 2019, when the local region watched on as a criminal gang used stolen diggers to rip cash-filled ATMs from towns across Monaghan and Cavan.
The ‘Hole in the Wall’ gang carried out a series of brazen ATM raids between December 2018 and August 2019. They stole from five banks using stolen 30-tonne diggers to rip the cash machines from the wall in daring overnight raids.
Monaghan retired superintendent, Fergus Treanor will feature on the programme. Mr Treanor said that "major planning" was put into an operation of this scale. He added that the destruction caused by these crimes left a "major dent" in the financial well-being of towns such as Ballybay and Castleblayney.
Tonight's episode also features never-before-seen CCTV footage of the crimes in action, and interviews with officers from the Garda Emergency Response Unit and local Intelligence Units. The gang carried out successful heists at Ballybay, Kingscourt, Castleblayney, and then struck twice in Kells on the same night eventually being apprehended in Virginia. 'The Case I Can't Forget' ATM heists airs tonight at 9.35pm on RTÉ One.
