A Carrickmacross woman says her childhood cancer diagnosis inspired her to train as a nurse to help others.
Ciara Downey was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2011 and has recently qualified as a nurse, with plans to specialise in childhood cancer.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, with a number of fundraising events and information sessions planned for families.
Ciara says the awareness week can be so beneficial to a family to help them understand what supports are available to them.
She told Northern Sound that her own journey motivated her to work in healthcare.
"This is because of the way staff treated me throughout my treatment," continued Ciara.
"I just really appreciated it and it's my way of giving back.
"I just loved helping people and working with children.
"So, I moved to Scotland and started my nursing journey and I'm just finished that now.
"Hopefully one day I'll work in the oncology unit and treat the children the way I was treated."
