A Monaghan town has paved the way for new legislation to be introduced by Government.
The Carrickmacross Tidy Towns group introduced an initiative where customers pay a refundable "deposit" on plastic bottles and aluminium cans prior to the pandemic in a "vending machine" type way.
According to Gerry Hand, the scheme was used as a "pilot project" to entice the Government to "sit up and take notice."
As a result, the hard-work of the local campaign certainly paid off, after Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan earlier today approved an application for a new not-for-profit company to operate a similar project on a national scale.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Gerry Hand of the Carrickmacross Tidy Towns group described the announcement as "great news" and that its "nice to say" the people of Carrickmacross and Co Monaghan were the first to talk about the project and more importantly - "get it up and running"
