The Scott Medal is awarded for ‘most exceptional bravery and heroism involving the risk of life in the execution of duty’.

A Carrickmacross Garda is to be posthumously awarded a bravery medal for his actions during a 1983 kidnapping.

The kidnapping of businessman Don Tidey by the IRA led to a nationwide manhunt, eventually leading Gardai to Derrada Woods in Leitrim.

Mr Tidey was freed when the hideout was discovered on December 16th, but Garda Gary Sheehan from Carrickmacross and Private Patrick Kelly from Longford were shot dead.
