Lucy Connor from Carrickmacross has been crowned Netwatch Ulster Young Carer of the Year. The 14-year-old has been described as her family’s “little rock,” as she helps care for her autistic brother, supports her mum, and recently has been helping to support her dad due to the sudden onset of a long-term illness. The local student shares a "unique bond" with her brother Hugh, understanding his needs and calming him during difficult moments.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Lucy said it's important for her to ensure that members of her family are happy and are receiving the best possible care. While taking on a caring role can be "overwhelming", Lucy has encouraged other young carers to speak to someone about how they are feeling. Lucy also highlighted the importance of young carers who she believes don't get enough recognition for what they do.
"I don't think young carers get enough recognition for what they do," explained Lucy. "When people think of carers they immediately think of older people, but they don't realise that people the same age as me or even younger are doing it and that's something that I want to promote in the future. My biggest advice to any young carer who may be feeling overwhelmed would be to talks to someone, even if it's a friend or your parents, the worst thing you can do is bottle it up or let it get on top of you."
