A candle lit vigil will be held in Carrickmacross this evening to remember babies and children from this region who have died.
The event which was run in conjunction with International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, provided families with the opportunity to reflect and also to talk about the impact child loss has had on them. Over the last few years, a campaign started to light up buildings also and this has grown substantially.
Monaghan County Council lit up two buildings in 2019; this year we'll be lighting up at least seven along with many other privately owned buildings and businesses. Cllr Colm Carthy and his wife Denise lost their first baby in 2016; Doireann was stillborn and it caused devastation to the Cathy's, their extended families and to their neighbours and friends.
He says it's only in the last few years that people have started to talk about child loss and that is a positive development. Cllr Carthy added that he and his wife received "valuable support" from Feileacain in the aftermath of their devastating loss. Cllr Cathy says for years for those who suffered stillbirths were almost forced by society to move on; to have another baby and everything would be alright. We know now, that was ridiculous.
