'We would like to place on record our thanks to all those who have supported us'

The chairman of the A5 ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign has spoken out following the opening week of the resumed Public Inquiry. According to Niall McKenna, loved ones of those who have lost their lives on the A5 have endured a "long and arduous" first week of the resumed public inquiry into the road's proposed upgrade.

Campaigners calling for the long-awaited dual carriageway to be built have said that despite difficulties faced over objections to a new stretch of A5 between Aughnacloy close to the Monaghan border and Derry, the resumed public inquiry got off to a "very positive and productive" start.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Niall McKenna from the ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign revealed that the commissioner has “now directed” that the public inquiry session on Road Safety will take place in the larger auditorium in the Strule Arts Centre.

The Commissioner’s decision was based on his assessment that since the start of the public inquiry there has been a significant groundswell in support for the A5.

According to Mr McKenna, this news comes as a “great comfort” to everyone and in particular the families of those who have lost loved ones on the A5 and other roads.”

He added that the group now looks forward to week two which will we hope begin with a packed Strule Arts Centre on Tuesday 30th May when the issue of Road Safety will be aired.

The group is appealing to supporters of the scheme to attend on that day in large numbers. "It’s really important to stress that there will not be a better opportunity to get this scheme over the line and therefore people should take that opportunity and get to the Strule Arts Centre on Tuesday 30th May at 10am," he said.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to all those who have supported us during the course of week one including those who have attended the Inquiry in person. Your presence and commitment to our campaign is very much appreciated."
