Campaign aims to reverse demolition of Dublin Street buildings

The campaign calls for the scheme to "change direction before it's too late".

An online campaign is seeking the reversal of plans to demolish four buildings, including the birthplace of Charles Gavan Duffy, on Dublin Street in Monaghan Town.

The Council's "South Dublin Street & Backlands Regeneration Scheme" aims to "attract new town centre development" as part of a "new Dublin Street Quarter".

The design proposals will also create a new street to be known as Gavan Duffy Place.

However, the "Love Monaghan, Save Dublin Street" campaign has called for the scheme to "change direction before it's too late" and says Gavan Duffy Place "should not be built" as it will lead to "increased vehicle traffic".

At a recent Monaghan MD meeting, councillors expressed concern that the "vocal" campaign was coming "at the 11th hour" when everything "is done and dusted".

Eddie O'Gara, from the Love Monaghan, Save Dublin Street campaign, told Shannonside Northern Sound that the creation of a new street would be "short-sighted":
