A Monaghan schoolboy has been named the Ulster Young Carer of the Year. 12-year-old Cameron Mills from Drum, is a devoted carer to his father, who battles a rare and challenging condition called IBMPFD.
A first year pupil at St. Aiden's Comprehensive School in Cootehill, Cameron has been helping his mam and dad at home for as long as he can remember. When he spoke to Northern Sound on his father's birthday, Cameron said he would happily continue with his caring duties for the "rest of my life". Cameron did not know his auntie had nominated him for the Netwatch Family Carer of the Year Awards but said he was very honoured for the recognition.
He told Northern Sound of just some of his duties: "At the weekend, I help mum get Dad up and I help wash, dress and feed dad and make sure he's comfortable. If he's able to go out for a drive, I help Mum hoist him into the car and I put on his battery-operated oxygen machine to help him breathe.
"During the week, when there's school, mum, won't let me help in the mornings but, at the weekend, I help feed Dad."
